Coral Academy of Science offers parents a choice when it comes to their student’s K-12 education in Reno, Nevada. A tuition-free, public school of choice, Coral Academy of Science provides diversity, a rigorous curriculum and college preparatory support. For the teachers and faculty at Coral Academy of Science, education standards are just the base—they go above and beyond the standards to assist in the long-term success of their students.

Sponsored by the Washoe County School District, Coral Academy of Science adheres to consistent standards of excellence, while also allowing students to choose enrichment courses and participate in NIAA league-sanctioned athletic opportunities. While strictly upholding national and state educational standards, the three schools (Elementary, Middle, and High) also focus on a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, The Arts, and Mathematics) curriculum in every class.

This education alternative invites parents to be actively involved in their students’ educations while also providing hands-on, creative outlets for learning. With phenomenal college-acceptance rates, a respectful community of peers, and teachers who are invested in the philosophy of education, students excel and make great strides toward successful futures.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS
[ Top of page ]

1. How is Coral Academy Funded?
Charter schools are public schools. Like district public schools, they are funded according to enrollment (also called average daily attendance, or ADA), and receive funding from the district and the state according to the number of students attending.
2. Can anyone go to Coral Academy?
Coral Academy of Science is non-sectarian, tuition-free, and open to any student who wishes to attend. Because of limited capacity, students may be placed on a waiting-list until space becomes available.
3. Does Coral Academy follow state standards?
Coral Academy's curriculum aligns with the Common Core Standards and the Nevada Academic Content Standards. Charter schools must follow all federal laws that apply to any other public school.
4. What's the difference between a charter school and a private school?
Charter schools are public schools of choice, meaning that families choose them for their children. They operate with freedom from some of the regulations that are imposed upon district schools. Charter schools are accountable for academic results and for upholding the promises made in their charters.
5. Does Coral Academy offer sports?
Yes. In the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years, Coral Academy High School began offering NIAA league-sanctioned sports teams including:
  • Cross-Country
  • Girls and Boys Basketball
  • Ski Team
  • Track and Field
  • Girls Volleyball
