High School Reopening Resources

Hello Coral HS Families!

Thank you for your continued patience and resilience with the many changes we experience in our lives due to COVID-19 Pandemic.

This section provides general considerations regarding the re-opening of school buildings and facilities to staff, students, and the public. Effective school re-opening will require diligent efforts to communicate with families, guardians, educators, and community members. The top priority is the health and safety of our students and school personnel. CAS-HS will provide clear guidance on steps the school is taking, including protocols for self-isolation for individuals who are sick or who have come in contact with someone who is sick.

The 2020–21 school year will look different from previous school years. CAS-HS will prioritize providing face-to-face instruction as public health conditions allow, instituting physical distancing and other preventative practices to keep students and staff healthy. Please remember that we will not hesitate to make changes to our plans and switch between learning models as additional guidance or requirements are released regarding COVID-19. The health and safety of our students and staff are of paramount importance. We will keep you posted as we receive more information. We always appreciate the support of our CAS-HS families and staff. We especially appreciate your help right now as we work through the many details for providing the best learning possible for our children during this most unusual time.

If you have selected the Hybrid model, please log into the IC portal, click on the Calendar tab and click on any school day.  Look at the student schedule to the right.  On Mondays and Wednesdays, if an orange box with “virtual” is visible, you are in the B group and do not report to school on Mondays and Wednesdays. Group B will be learning at home on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and report to school in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If there is not an orange box with “virtual”, you are in the A group and will report to school in person on Mondays and Wednesdays. You will be learning at home on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

While Group A students will attend classes all day in person at Coral HS, Group B students will be meeting their teachers and classmates virtually. Distance learning students will be working from home but meeting with their teachers every day through appropriate attendance capacities. Students, Hybrid & distance learning, will be asked during the school day to review training resources for google classroom, student orientation, student handbook highlights, and review safety measures for this year. Students will also be reviewing syllabi and teacher expectations for the year.

If you selected the full-time Distance Learning model, please make sure you are following the schedule for attendance as well as educational purposes. Teachers share Google Meet links on their google classrooms.

If you choose to change your learning model for any reason, please contact with Kathleen Sharkey and Mr. Dede at ksharkey@coralacademy.org & sdede@coralacademy.org. The final date to change your learning model is at 3:30 PM on September 2nd, 2020.

Building Safety

To ensure the safety of all students and staff, everyone who is on-site is expected to wear a face cover, maintain social distancing, and maintain good hygiene by washing hands and using provided hand sanitizer on a regular basis.  Students will be encouraged to perform the district’s self-screening process at home, and a tool can be found in our parent orientation and will soon be on the website, or you can go to cdc.com/self-screening. Staff will receive temperature screenings upon arrival. Students will be screened upon arrival. Students with a temperature of 100.4 will be assessed, isolated, and parents will be called.

Classrooms

Each classroom has been measured, rearranged, and designed to seat students at least six feet apart to meet social distancing guidelines. Labs may be conducted virtually and will be limited by individual tasks.  We ask that each student maintain the supplies they will use in class. Additional supplies will be provided as needed to individuals, but there will be no shared supplies that are not sanitized. Technological devices will be supplied to students who have elected the Hybrid model, and they will be cleaned after each use.

Attendance

During this school year, we are still monitoring attendance for both Hybrid and Full Distance learners. Students are responsible for being “present” during their scheduled classes and satisfying the criteria proposed by the WCSD and Nevada Department of Education. Coral Academy of Science High School believes it is the students’ responsibility to communicate with their teachers regarding technological delays, audio/video issues, absences, and requesting make-up work during school hours. Furthermore, we are asking teachers to review attendance criteria during school hourstherefore, students need to be completing the necessary attendance requirements during school hours in order to be counted accurately.

Building Logistics

One-way traffic and traffic patterns: Students and staff will be asked to follow all one-way traffic patterns.  All hallways have been clearly marked in the building to maintain a safe environment. We ask that you practice social distancing with the person beside you, in front of you, or behind you. There are arrows and signs throughout the building to help navigate these traffic patterns.

Restrooms: Each restroom will be marked with the maximum number of students (3) allowed in at a time. Students will receive a pass during class time to use the restroom, and we will be cleaning the restrooms frequently throughout the day.

Health Clinic/Medical: We have designated separate spaces in the school for students who are exhibiting possible COVID-19 like symptoms. The general Clinic area will be for students who need medication, first aid, and personal hygiene or other medical assistance.

Handwashing: Any classroom or learning space with a sink will have a station with soap and paper towels for handwashing.  This will be encouraged for all students and staff throughout the day.

Lunch- Lunch will be 45 minutes long. Students are encouraged to eat outside when weather permits. We will have a few tables set up in the cafeteria for students that will be clearly marked for social distancing.  Students must always keep their mask on unless they are eating and/or drinking at that time. Students who want to use their phones must be outside. There will be no microwaves or snack sales, so please bring your own cold lunches.

We are a closed campus, and students will not be allowed to order in their lunches.

Family/Visitor Access to Building- To minimize the traffic in the school building during the day, we would like families to call or email with questions and requests to release their student for any type of appointment. We will not be accepting handwritten notes for absences at this time.  No visitors are allowed on campus during this time.

Bell Schedule- School begins at 8:35 and dismisses at 3:10 every day. We are requesting that students leave as soon as their last class is over.  This will provide our custodial staff ample time to disinfect the classrooms and school.

Athletics and Activities- All athletics and activities have been postponed at this time.  This includes dances, assemblies, back to school night, etc. There will be no clubs or tutoring, and the Boys & Girls Club will NOT be picking up students from the school.

Miscellaneous Items

Students will not have access to lockers (academic or P.E.) or drinking fountains at this time.  It is encouraged for students to bring their own clear water bottle, and these can be filled at the hydration stations.
Backpacks are allowed but must always be in a student’s possession.
Students will still be dressing out for PE, so it is encouraged that they label their clothing and wash it frequently.

For new students to Coral Academy of Science High School, there will be many staff members around campus to help answer questions and navigate the campus.  We look forward to meeting you and getting to know you.  For our returning students, we are so happy to see you again.  We are excited to welcome you back to the 20-21 school year and are here to help in any way we can.

Don’t forget to wear your mask, wash your hands often, and maintain 6 feet of social distancing.

See you soon!

Learning Models

Hybrid Learners:

A Hybrid Learning Model is one that combines elements of both In-Person Learning and Distance Learning in the CAS-HS context; we are referring to a learning model in which students are receiving in-person instruction for part of the school week and are receiving Distance Learning instruction for part of the school week

  • While in school, all provisions in In-person learning (e.g. social distancing use of PPE etc.) remain the same.
  • While on distance all provisions of Distance Learning (e.g. certified teachers & expectations) remain the same.

Our model approach is to ensure adequate resources, effective social-distancing practices, and fair and equitable access to education for all of our students. Concurrently, our academic plan reflects the purpose and mission statement of our school.

GROUP A: MONDAY & WEDNESDAY
GROUP B: TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS
FRIDAYS: ALL STUDENTS

Distance learners:

Students who chose the Distance Learning Model will be expected to operate on the schedule given for attendance and educational purposes. Teachers will be delivering materials on Fridays. Throughout the following week, students and teachers will meet online to review materials and assess student understanding. Teachers will be delivering a class syllabus and calendar for your reference. Students will be expected to adhere to it as we will enforce our late work policy and expect students to meet the demands the teachers have to meet during this time.

FOR ALL LEARNERS

  • Google Classroom will be the academic platform for all students
  • In-person instruction will primarily be supplemental learning
  • All assignments will be turned in through google classroom
  • All grades and attendance will be through Infinite Campus
  • Schedules will be cohesive with our academic learning model
